How much does air conditioning cost in the UK?

Typical costs to buy, install, run and service air conditioning, and how paying monthly compares.

The cost of air conditioning depends on the type of system, the number of rooms, how hard the install is and the brand. The figures below are typical UK guide prices for supply and installation. Your own price depends on a survey.

Typical installation costs

SystemTypical installed cost
Single wall-mounted unit, one room£1,500 to £2,500
Multi-split, two to three rooms£3,500 to £7,000
Ceiling cassette, per unit£2,500 to £5,000
Ducted system£5,000 and up
VRF for a larger buildingPriced per project, often tens of thousands

Prices rise with long pipe runs, difficult access, work at height, electrical upgrades and out-of-hours working.

Running costs

A typical single-room unit uses well under a kilowatt of electricity while running, so it usually costs pence per hour to run, depending on your tariff, the size of the room and how hard the system is working. Systems with good efficiency ratings cost less to run.

Servicing

Most systems need servicing once a year. Paid separately, an annual service typically costs from around £100 to £200 per unit, more for larger commercial systems.

Buying outright or paying monthly

Buying outright means paying the full installed price upfront, then paying for servicing and repairs as they come up. On a SteadyTemp plan there is no upfront cost: one fixed monthly payment covers the system, installation, an annual service and parts and labour cover. Single-room plans start from £29 a month.

We quote both options on every job, so you can compare them side by side.
